Sanctuaries
for
SpiritualWanderers

A dark retreat is a meditation practice undertaken in complete, sustained darkness — not a dim room, but the absence of light altogether, held for several days. The practice is ancient: Tibetan Buddhist and Bön lineages have used it for more than a thousand years, with parallel forms in Christian mysticism, Taoist inner alchemy, and shamanic traditions across the Americas. What they share is one observation — when the eyes have nothing to do, attention turns inward. Acraya builds private, purpose-built dark rooms inside established retreat centers, with facilitation and care throughout.

What it is

A dark retreat is an extended meditation held in complete darkness — sealed, light-free, unbroken. Not a dim room, but the absence of light altogether, sustained for days rather than hours.

Where it comes from

Darkness practice is old. Tibetan Buddhist and Bön lineages have preserved it for over a thousand years as a method for working directly with the mind’s own luminosity. Similar forms appear in Christian contemplative enclosure, Taoist inner alchemy, and shamanic traditions across the Americas. Each arrived at the same practice independently.

What happens in the body and mind

Without light, the body’s circadian signalling reorganizes. Sleep architecture shifts, the nervous system settles into a depth of rest most modern lives rarely permit, and the mind — deprived of anything to look at — begins to turn its attention on itself. Practitioners commonly describe vivid inner imagery, emotional material surfacing and resolving, unusually stable concentration, and a loosening of the ordinary sense of a separate self.

The experience at Acraya

You enter a private room with your own bed and bathroom. Meals are prepared and delivered without light. An experienced facilitator checks in each day; non-contact monitoring runs quietly in the background. There is no schedule and nothing you are required to do. At the close, you return to light gradually, under supervision, with time to integrate before you travel.

What is a dark retreat?

A dark retreat is a profound meditation practice involving an extended stay in complete darkness. It is rooted in traditions like Tibetan Buddhism, Bön, Native American shamanism, and Christian mysticism.

Conducted in sealed, light-free spaces—ranging from simple rooms to dedicated cabins—retreats last from days to weeks, tailored to your experience and goals.

What is the Way of

the ACRAYA?

The Acraya are Travelers who wander far and quietly among the planes of awareness, gathering seeds of Light which are the keys to unlocking understanding. In the course of our journeys we encounter and must overcome trials and lessons of fire which are unimaginable to mortal man. But, however, out of time and space, within the worlds of Beingness, there are matters and means of labors of wisdom which serve higher other ends. And so we search and serve and wander, always seeking the keys and truths which may aid the course and cause of mortal man within the many realms below. And this is the Acraya, the Truth Gatherers, those few souls bound by no tradition or path save that of ultimate truth and wisdom to lead to pure release.

This is a way that requires great courage and independence and strength of self. This is the Way of the Wanderers, the Acraya, the gatherers of words of truth, of wisdom gleaned from existence ITSELF. The no-path, the Wandering, is, on one level, another path itself. Wanderers of the Acraya, however, experience and know a freedom unknown to others for they can move freely and between the various ways and paths that have been created by other souls. And indeed, at higher levels, the Wanderers leave the understood and well trod paths of others and step into the Absolute, the Abyss without any path. For there, there lies no structures or ways, simply Beingness within existence ITSELF and the fabric of untapped potential and the material of reality.
